Fabrics
Center square & second border section = ½ yard = #405B
First border section= ½ yard = #403B
First border section = ½ yard = #401B
Second border section = ½ yard = #404J

Third border & appliqués = 2 yards = #400B
Vines & borders for appliqués = 1 yard = #406R
Binding = ½ yard = #406B
Backing = 3 yards of any Pat Nichols II fabric
Steam-A-Seam II fusible web = 2 yards

NOTE: All strips are cut across the width of the fabric unless otherwise noted.
Cutting
#405B = Cut (1) 12 ½" square. From the remainder, cut (2) 5 ½" strips. Cut these strips into (8) 5 ½" squares.
#403B = Cut (7) 1 ½" strips.
#401B = Cut (8) 1 ½" strips.
#404J = Cut (2) 5 ½" strips. Cut these strips into (4) 12 ½" rectangles.
#402B = Cut (1) 5 ½" strip. Cut this into (4) 5 ½" squares. Cut (1) 7 ½" strip. Cut this into
(4) 7 ½" squares.
#400B = Cut (4) 7 1/2" strips. Trim these strips to 32 1/2" in length.
#406R = Cut and prepare approximately 80" of bias for the vines between the flowers. Julie
used Clover's 6MM (1/4") Fusible Bias Tape Maker.
Construction
First border:
1. Sew together (3) 1 1/2" strips of #401B and (2) 1 1/2" strips of #403B, alternately, beginning
and ending with a #401B strip. Press seams toward #401B. Repeat for a second strip set.
2. Cut (4) 12 1/2" sections from these sets. From the remainder, cut (8) 1 1/2" sections.
3. For the checkerboard corners, sew another strip set using (3) 1 1/2" strips of #403B and (2)
1 1/2" strips of #401B. Sew these strips together, alternately, beginning and ending with a #403B strip. Press seams toward #403B. Cut (12) 1 1/2" sections from this set.
4. Using all of the 1 1/2" strip sections, refer to photo to construct four checkerboard corners.
There will be (5) strip sections in each corner unit. Press.
5. Sew (1) 12 1/2" border section to opposite sides of the 12 1/2" center square. Press toward the borders.
6. Sew a checkerboard corner unit to both ends of the remaining 12 1/2" border sections. Press
toward the borders. Sew these completed pieced borders to the top and bottom of the center. Press toward the borders.
Second border:
7. Sew (1) 5 1/2" square of #405B to opposite ends of each of the 12 1/2" #404J rectangles.
Press toward the squares. Sew (1) 5 1/2" square of #402B to both ends of two of these sections. Press toward the #405B squares.
8. Sew a shorter border section to opposite sides of the center. Press toward the borders.
Sew a longer border section to the remaining sides of the center. Press toward the borders.
Third border:
9. Sew a 32 1/2" border rectangle of #400B to opposite sides of the center. Press toward the
border. Sew (1) 7 1/2" square of #402B to each end of the remaining border rectangles. Press toward the borders. Sew these borders sections to the remaining sides of the center. Press
toward the borders.
Applique:
10. Following the instructions on the Steam-A-Seam II, apply the fusible web to the wrong side
of the remaining #400B fabric. Using the photo as a guide, cut out the number of appliqués needed to fill the quilt top.
11. Place the appliqués on the right side of the remaining #406R fabric. Fuse in place and cut
out each piece leaving a scant 1/4" border. Apply fusible web to the wrong side of #406R. Fuse the completed appliqués and bias vines in place.
Decorative stitching:
12. Using Cordonnet thread, straight stitch around the outside of each of the inner appliqué
motifs. Using the Silk Finish thread, buttonhole stitch around the border of each appliqué.
13. Layer with your preferred batting and backing. Quilt as desired. Prepare and attach binding made from fabric #406B.
